Welcome to Narragansett RI
A History of Narragansett
The Town of Narragansett was incorporated in 1901. Back in 1675 Roland Robinson settled in South County and purchased land in Pettaquamscutt and Pt. Judith from the Narragansett Indians at which time Narragansett was part of South Kingstown. Early in Narragansett’s history, shipbuilding was a prosperous industry especially along Narrow River at Middlebridge where many sailing vessels were built to accommodate the areas maritime economy. South Ferry (Franklin Ferry) was a flourishing community, offering ferry service to Jamestown and Newport for more than a hundred years in the early 1700's. South Ferry Church was a landmark on every sea captain's chart of Narragansett Bay.
Between 1888 and 1920 Narragansett became well-known as a chic summer resort with its majestic hotels, great estates, "summer cottages" and white sandy beaches. Narragansett’s most well-known landmark was the Narragansett Casino. The Towers on Ocean Road served as the grand entrance and enclosed walkway to the casino which encompassed the entire area between Ocean Road and Mathewson Street. The casino consisted of retail shops, cafes, parlors, a billiard room and ballroom. The Towers are all that remain after a devastating fire in 1900.
Today, Narragansett has become one of the east coasts finest summer resort communities, drawing in guests from all over the world. Visitors come for a laid-back beach lifestyle, the beautiful white sandy beaches, pleasure boating, sport fishing, site seeing and much more Narragansett also offers many amenities making it a wonderful community for a year-round home of many residents.
